This three-day conference will examine the cultural consequences of the colonisation and decolonisation process in areas of South East and South Asia that have attracted relatively little attention in the English-speaking world: former French Indochina; Guam, Macau, East Timor, Goa; the Philippines; the former Dutch East Indies. By bringing together experts in French, Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch colonial history, and on the postcolonial period in the territories concerned, it is hoped to facilitate a dialogue across cultures and disciplines that will expand awareness of the different cultural, social and political processes involved, and will offer ways of thinking about colonisation and the post-colonial that go beyond dominant British models.
