This conference will broadly explore what 'transatlantic' means for the people of Africa, the Americas, and Europe, both in contemporary society and in the past. It will examine cultural exchanges and their impact on the cultures and identities of peoples in the transatlantic world, and how artists, scholars and writers have seen and explored these transatlantic relationships.
the conference will take place at the Maastricht Centre for Transatlantic Studies in Maastricht, the Netherlands. As Maastricht is a meeting-point for European cultures and 2002 marks an anniversary of the Treaty of European Union, the city is an ideal venue to explore issues of citizenship, nation and culture.
