A 4-week NEH Summer Institute for Teachers (July 7 - August 2, 2002) will be held at Georgia State University (Atlanta). Participants recieve a $2,800 stipend. Apply by March 1, 2002 by contacting engneh@langate.gsu.edu
This Institute will be a comparative study applying critical thinking and intellectual objectivity to two apparently distinct cultures. Through close readings of Welty and Gordimer who reveal underlying aspects of racism and of Walker and Magona who expose the unacknowledged shades of racism, participants will come to new understandings regarding the truths that fiction reveals concerning power, difference, and human relationships.
Co-Directors Drs. Pearl McHaney and Renée Schatteman
