Contributions are sought for a conference on History's future, to be held at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario on 15-17 March 2002.
At the end of the 20th century the historical profession has been buffeted by a series of challenges. On the one hand, debates about the impact of postmodernism have left the profession fragmented. On the other hand, the profile of history within the public conscience of Canada and the United States remains a source of concern. These two poles are connected by the question of whether or not history retains social relevance. Our conference will bring together an outstanding group of scholars, graduate students, teachers, journalists, filmmakers, and business leaders to explore the place of history in the 21st century. Guest speakers include Keith Jenkins, Margaret Conrad, Alison Prentice, Roch Carrier, Mark Kingwell, Ian McKay, JL Granatstein, Mark Poster, and Gary Nash.
We invite proposals for individual papers in English or French (20 minutes of delivery time) or for panels that address any topic relating to the conference's conceptual framework. Papers approaching their topic in innovative ways or from a multidisciplinary perspective are especially welcome. We invite the participation of established scholars, researchers, journalists, and graduate students.

Les défis qui ont confronté l'histoire à la fin du XXe siècle sont nombreaux. Les promesses du post-modernisme n'ont pas été toujours tenues ni même acceptées, et la place de l'histoire dans la conscience publique, au Canada et aux Etats Unis, est plus incertaine que jamais. C'est en fait la pertinence de l'histoire dans nos sociétés qui fut, qui est remise en question par de tels débats. Cette conférence réunira un groupe unique de chercheurs et enseignants, étudiants, journalistes, artistes et entrepreneurs autour d'un thème à la fois simple et riche de nuances, celui de la place de l'histoire au XXIe siècle. Parmi nos invités, on notera la présence de Keith Jenkins, Margaret Conrad, Alison Prentice, Roch Carrier, Mark Kingwell, Ian McKay, JL Granatstein, Mark Poster, et Gary Nash.
Les communications se feront en français ou an anglais, et seront limitées à vingt minutes. Les propositions de contribution peuvent concerner soit une communication individuelle, soit un ensemble de quelques communications portant sur un thème commun. Une attention particulière sera accordée aux initiatives reflétant une approche novatrice ou multidisciplinaire. Chercheurs et enseignants, étudiants et journalistes sont invités à contribuer à ce colloque.
