China Historical GIS (Geographic Information System) datasets have been made available for download from our website.
There are two sets of ArcView shapefiles:
10,880 Cities and Towns and 412 Prefecture Level Polygons (circa Qing Dynasty 1820)
a spatio-temporal database for the Songjiang - Taihu Region (Han Dynasty to Present Day
The shapefile attributes contain placenames (in Pinyin and GBK characters), adminstrative units, lat-long coordinates and present day locations.
This Pre-Release Version was developed for the CHGIS International Workshop on Historical GIS, held recently at Fudan University in Shanghai. We are currently working on revising and improving this data for an Official Release scheduled for Spring of 2002.
