The DC Caucus (www.dcarchivists.org) of the Mid-Atlantic Regional
Archives Conference (MARAC) is pleased to announce some terrific
activities in celebration of Archives Week, October 7 - 13, 2001.
These activities include:
1. The 4th Annual MARAC/DC Caucus Archives Fair, 12:30 to 5:00 PM,
Thursday October 11, 2001 at the Smithsonian Institution's Ripley
Center, Ripley Center QUAD room 3111, National Mall, Washington, DC.
The Archives Fair will have participants from over twenty of the
area's archival institutions such as the Library of Congress, the
National Archives and Records Administration, the many archives within
the Smithsonian Institution, George Washington University, Howard
University, the University of Maryland, The Felix Grant Jazz Archives, and
the Washingtoniana Division of the DC Public Library.
At 2:30pm Ms. Nina Gilden Seavey of the George Washington University's
Documentary Center, and producer and director of the Emmy winning
documentary, A PARALYZING FEAR: The Story of Polio in America, will
discuss her experiences while conducting research in archives. Check

2. Ninety Years of Scurlock, is a program that examines the
photographic legacy of the Scurlock Photographic Studio in Washington,
D.C. This program will be held on Wednesday, October 10, 2001, at 6:30
p.m., in the Auditorium, Room A-5, of the Martin Luther King, Jr.
Memorial Library, 901 G Street, NW, Washington, DC.
Mr. John Fleckner, Chief Archivist at the National Museum of American
History, Smithsonian Institution, will speak about the Scurlock family
and the impact of their photography studio on the thriving U Street
community in Washington, and its role in documenting historical events
in the city of Washington, D.C. Fleckner will also show slides from
photographs in the Scurlock Studio collection that are housed at the
National Museum of History. The Scurlock Photographic Studio was the
most prominent African-American photography studio in Washington,
D.C., from 1904 to 1983. Ninety Years of Scurlock is co-sponsored by
Moorland-Spingarn Research Center of Howard University, Gelman Library
at The George Washington University, The Washington Historical Society
and the District of Columbia Public Library.

3. The National Archives Assembly presents an Archives Week event,
"The Charters of Freedom: An Interim Conservation Report." The
speakers include Mary Lynne Ritzenthaler and Catherine Nicholson of
NARA's Document Conservation Laboratory. This program will be held at
10:45am-12: 00 noon, on Wednesday, October 10, 2001, in the Auditorium
of the National Archives at College Park, Maryland.
