The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission is currently developing The Hornets' Nest, a peer-reviewed scholarly journal that will be published exclusively on the internet. The intent of the journal is to provide a medium for scholarship in the history of the Carolina Piedmont and of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
The Hornets' Nest seeks manuscripts representing various fields of historical inquiry ranging from:

- economic
- labor, and
- social
