Beginning October 15, 2001, The Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies will interrupt public hours for library and archival research in order to facilitate the relocation and integration of Balch holdings within The Historical Society of Pennsylvania. HSP and The Balch have recently committed to uniting as one organization. By the end of June 2002, they will have combined their library and archival collections, consolidated public programming and exhibits, and unified educational and community initiatives. The library and archival collections of both institutions will be physically combined in HSP’s facilities at 13th and Locust Streets, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Access to the Balch holdings will resume through HSP's facilities in phases through the coming fall, winter, and spring, with all processed archival materials and published print materials accessible by June 30, 2002.
Please watch the Balch and HSP websites for updates and announcements of access to specific Balch collections or types of material. Researchers who had planned to make extensive use of Balch holdings in late 2001 or early 2002 should consult with Balch staff about the possibility of special accommodations. Please direct inquiries to firstname.lastname@example.org or 215-925-8090 x217.
