With this first call for papers for the 2002 Annual Conference of the Canadian Association of African Studies, we invite the submission of proposals for both panels and individual papers. Panel proposals are especially desired, although we will of course welcome the submission of individual papers and will make every effort to create interesting and thematically coherent panels from these proposals. We especially encourage panel proposals that deal with one of the major sub-themes of the conference:

1. Health and Society
2. Migration and Ethnicity
3. Food and Development
4. The Politics of Reconstruction
5. Popular Culture

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: January 15th, 2002. In order to allow for a good programme preparation, no proposals will be accepted after the deadline.

FORM OF SUBMISSIONS:
PANELS: Every panel submission should include three to four papers, a chair and a discussant. The chair and discussant can be the same person. The submission should include the following items:

1. Name of each participant, including their institutional affiliation and the title of the panel
2. Title of each paper and an abstract of 200-250 words
3. Postal and electronic addresses for each participant

INDIVIDUALS: Persons submitting individual papers should submit their names, titles, addresses and an abstract of 200-250 words.

ALL PANEL AND INDIVIDUAL PROPOSALS SHOULD BE SENT TO THE PROJECT SECRETARIAT ELECTRONICALLY OR BY REGULAR POST. PLEASE ENSURE ALL FILES ARE SAVED AS "RTF" (RICH TEXT FORMAT), WORD OR WORDPERFECT FILES IF SUBMITTED AS ATTACHMENTS.

Participants will be expected to make their papers available to discussants at least four weeks before the conference.

REGISTRATION: All conference participants must register for the Congress of the Social Sciences and Humanities Federation as well as for the CAAS conference (under the Society Registration section). In addition, all North American participants must be members in good standing of CAAS. All participants whose papers have been accepted must register for the conference by 15 April 2002 in order to have their panels or papers included in the programme.

A SPECIAL NOTE FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS: The Area Studies Associations under the Canadian Council of Area Studies Learned Societies (CCASLS) are hosting Joint Graduate Methodology Workshops during the CAAS Conference. Graduate students interested in making presentations on their research methodologies, problems encountered in accessing sources, draft chapters of theses or research proposals, or anything related to doing research, are asked to provide their names, institutional affiliation, and a 250 word abstract by 15 January 2002 to the CAAS secretariat (see address above).

Nous souhaitons inviter la soumission de propositions de communications et de panels pour le congrès annuel de l’ACÉA (édition 2002). Les propositions de panels sont particulièrement recherchées. Les textes individuels seront, bien sûr, également acceptés et réunis autant que possible en panels aux thématiques cohérentes et unifiantes. Nous encourageons tout spécialement les propositions qui s’inscriront dans les sous-thèmes suivants :

1. Santé et société
2. Migration et ethnicité
3. Alimentation et développement
4. Les enjeux politiques de la reconstruction
5. Culture populaire

DATE LIMITE POUR LES SOUMISSIONS: Le 15 janvier 2002. Afin d’assurer la préparation adéquate du programme, aucune soumission ne sera acceptée après cette date.

MODALITÉS DES SOUMISSIONS PANELS : Chaque soumission devra inclure de 3 à 4 communications en plus d’identifier un président de session et un répondant. Une même personne peut porter les titres de président de session et de répondant. Chaque soumission devra également contenir :

1. Le nom de chaque participant, leur affiliation institutionnelle et le titre du panel;
2. Le titre de chaque communication et un résumé de 200-250 mots pour chacune d’entre elles;
3. Les coordonnées postales et électroniques de chaque participant, président de panel et répondant.

COMMUNICATIONS INDIVIDUELLES: Pour proposer une communication à titre individuel, prière de soumettre un dossier incluant le nom de l’auteur, son titre et ses coordonnées ainsi qu’un résumé de 200-250 mots.

TOUTE SOUMISSION, INDIVIDUELLE OU COLLECTIVE, DOIT ÊTRE ENVOYÉE AU SECRÉTARIAT DE L’ÉVÉNEMENT PAR VOIE ÉLECTRONIQUE OU PAR LA POSTE (voir ci-après). VEUILLEZ VOUS ASSURER QUE LES FICHIERS TRANSMIS PAR VOIE ÉLECTRONIQUE SONT ENREGISTRÉS EN FORMAT "RTF" (Rich Text Format), EN WORD OU EN WORD PERFECT LORSQU’ENVOYÉS EN PIÈCE JOINTE.

Il est entendu que les participants transmettront leurs communications aux répondants de leurs panels attitrés au plus tard 4 semaines avant le début de la conférence.

INSCRIPTION: Tous les participants devront acquitter des frais de conférence auprès de la Fédération des sciences humaines et sociales du Canada et auprès de l’ACÉA. De plus, les participants provenant de l’Amérique du Nord devront s’assurer que leur adhésion à l’Association est en règle. Par ailleurs, tous ceux dont les communications ont été acceptées pour fins de présentation devront avoir réglé ces frais avant le 15 avril 2002 pour que leurs communications soient annoncées dans le programme de la conférence.

À L’ATTENTION DES ÉTUDIANTS DE 2E ET 3E CYCLES: Les associations d’études régionales regroupées sous l’égide du Conseil canadien des sociétés savantes d’études régionales (CCSSER) organisent conjointement une série d’ateliers sur la méthodologie qui aura lieu lors du congrès de l’ACÉA. Les étudiants qui souhaitent présenter une communication portant sur les méthodologies de recherche, les difficultés de la collecte de données, ou sur des chapitres de thèse, des projets de recherche ou toute autre question liée à la recherche, sont invités à le faire. Prière de faire parvenir vos coordonnées, votre affiliation institutionnelle et un résumé de 250 mots avant le 15 janvier 2002 au secrétariat de l’ACÉA (même adresse que ci-dessus).
