An international conference on national identities and national movements in European history will be held on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 March 2002 in Ghent and Leuven (Belgium).
Three themes will be addressed by the following key-note speakers:
- Nation formation and national identity
Montserrat Guibernau (The Open University, UK)
Michael Hechter (University of Washington)
Jan Penrose (University of Edinburgh)
- National identities in pre-modern and modern times
Rees Davies (Oxford University)
Joep Leerssen (Universiteit van Amsterdam)
Piet Leupen (emeritus professor Universiteit van Amsterdam)
- Elite agitation and mass support in nationalist movements
Ulf Hedetoft (Aalborg University)
Miroslav Hroch (emeritus professor Charles University Prague)
Brendan O’Leary (London School of Economics)
The conference is only open to invited speakers. There will be no call for papers. The conference language is English.
