I need your help with a book project exploring doctoral studentsí relationships with their faculty advisors.
The results of this project should increase our understanding of the
interpersonal and socio-cultural dynamics of the apprenticeship model that is at the heart of doctoral education.I am writing to invite authors to share specific experiences that relate to the role of the advisor on the nature and course of a doctoral studentís graduate career. I am particularly interested in the influence of such characteristics as gender, race, class, culture, sexual orientation, age, and student ability on the advisor advisee relationship.
If you are interested in contributing to this book project, please submit a proposal for a first person
narrative to Elena Klaw, Ph.D. by August 20th, 2001 at email@example.com. If your proposal is
selected for consideration as a book chapter, you will be asked to write a narrative essay of no more than
25 pages and to send the completed manuscript to firstname.lastname@example.org as a Microsoft Word attachment. Proposals will be selected on the basis of writing quality and their contribution to the diversity
of perspectives to be represented.
For demographic purposes, it would be helpful if you list the following
information about yourself at the bottom of your proposal: discipline of study, status of graduate study (year in grad school or year of Ph.D. completion), current job title, gender, ethnic identification, age, and identification with any minority group.
The submission of proposals and narratives implies consent to participate in the project and acknowledges
direct attribution to you in the book. Please conceal names of all institutions and individuals mentioned in your submissions and alert me if you would like to author your submission using a pseudonym.
Participation is voluntary and choosing not to participate in this project will not affect your relationship with San Jose State University. No risks or direct benefits are anticipated associated with your participation in this project.
If you have questions about this project, I will be happy to talk to you. I can be reached at 408-924-5623. If you have questions or complaints about research participantsí rights, or in the event of
a research related injury, please contact Nabil Ibrahim, Ph.D., Associate Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research at (408) 924-2480. Thank you in advance for your help.
