Call for Papers
'Eurocentrism' (April 2002)
Culture, Theory and Critique invites the submission of essays for a special issue devoted to Eurocentrism and its relation to theory. In numerous theoretical debates, influenced by political, ethical, postcolonial and multicultural concerns, Eurocentrism is a notion which has been frequently deployed but rarely analysed. The question is whether it has become a theoretical cliché and, if so, whether it can be rescued for incisive critique.
Possible topics for the issue may include, but are not limited to:
- are European theories inevitably eurocentric and, if so, in what way(s)?
- is it the origins of theories or the modes of their application which determine their effects and the outcomes?
- if theories are determined by origin is there anything to be done? can they be adapted to become sensitive to context?
- is the homogenizing of the diverse metropolitan centres in the term Eurocentrism itself a problem? what is the 'euro' in Eurocentric?
- how is it that some European theories are adopted smoothly in non-European locations while others are strongly resisted? which theories seem able to travel in this way and why?
- what relation is there between eurocentrism and the policing of borders currently described as 'fortress Europe'?
Essays should not normally exceed 7000 words, and should be accompanied by an abstract of 150 words. Three copies of essays should be sent.
