The conference theme has been chosen to reflect Liverpool's role both as an ocean port and as the hub for a wide variety of transhipment trades, coastal and otherwise. Papers will follow this theme over as wide a period as possible and in any part of the Northern Seas (the Baltic, North, Norwegian Seas and North Atlantic Ocean). Subsidiary themes which intending contributors may care to consider include intermodal integration, as in the ownership of ports and vessels by railway companies, and the movement of cargoes within ports themselves. The trade of major inland waterways comes within the theme, as does railway traffic inland provided that it relates directly to the handling of sea-borne goods.
