If as a Humanities PhD you have ever wondered what career options might exist for you outside the academy, there is an email discussion list that can help you answer that question. WRK4US ("work for us")was founded in 1999 by Paula Foster Chambers (PhD December 2000 in Rhetoric and Composition, The Ohio State University) as a safe place for the free and supportive discussion of nonacademic careers for Humanities PhDs. Since then, it has grown to over 800 subscribers from all over North America. The tone is consistently helpful and supportive, and thanks to a strict "no spam" policy (no petitions, no virus warnings, etc.), nearly all postings are substantive and relevant.
A unique feature of WRK4US is the Guest Speaker Discussions, in which Humanities PhDs who have succeeded outside the academy come onto the list for a week, share their stories, and answer questions from the group. Guest Speaker Discussion topics covered in the year 2000 included "Technical Writing," "Consulting," "The Info-Tech/Dot Com Fields," "Nonprofit Organizations," "Editing and Publishing," and "Identifying Your Transferable Skills." The 2001 series will include "Museums" (April 23-28), "Training and Development" (June 11-15), and in July, a special appearance by Drs. Susan Basalla and Maggie Debelius, authors of "So What Are You Going to Do With That? A Guide to Career-Changing for M.A.'s and Ph.D.'s" (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2001). More topics will be announced later in the year.
Daily list volume ranges from close to zero (between discussions) to about a dozen messages a day during the week-long Guest Speaker Discussions. There are five or six Guest Speaker Discussions per year.
