At the Institute of European History in Mainz, Germany, IEG-MAPS, a new server for digital historical maps has officially been opened. It can be visited at the URL http://www.ieg-maps.uni-mainz.de
IEG-MAPS contains downloadable maps on five general themes
- Germany's territorial and political development since 1812
- German economic integration in the 19th century
- The administrative development of larger German territorial states since 1815
- The development of lines of transport (rail, road, inland navigations and canals)
- Europe's territorial and political development since 1812
All maps can be viewed and downloaded (in Postscript and PDF formats). There is no fee for personal use of the maps; institutional fees ar subject to negotiation. At the present there are about 80 maps to be viewed; this number will be increased to about 150 by the end of this year. The project is sponsored in part by the Gerda Henkel Foundation, Duesseldorf, Germany.
