This major international conference, which will take place at the University of Southampton, UK, 8-10 July 2002, with keynote addresses from Pam Cook (Southampton), Jane Gaines (Duke), Andrew Higson (East Anglia), and Michael Wood (Princeton), will raise a series of questions about the 'afterlife' of the classic novel in its adaptation for the big and small screen. It will be a forum for discussing individual film and television adaptations, their film-makers and their audiences, and for thinking in detail about the connection between source, text, and screen image.
