New England Conference of the Association for Asian Studies
Williams College
October 13-14, 2001
Reminder: Call for Papers Deadline June 1, 2001
The 2001 annual meeting of the New England Conference of the Association for Asian Studies will be hosted by Williams College and the Williams College Department of Asian Studies on Saturday, October 13 and Sunday, October 14, 2001 in the beautiful Berkshire Mountains during peak fall foliage season. Proposals are invited for panels, individual papers, and roundtables in all areas of Asian Studies. Scholars from other regions are welcome to participate.
The deadline for submission of proposals is Friday, June 1, 2001. Areas of particular interest include (but are not limited to) Asian Art/Art History, Uses of Technology in Teaching, Asian American Studies, and Economics. We encourage panel organizers to be creative in their approach and to take advantage of Williams' excellent museum and AV/technological facilities when designing their presentations. Proposals should include a summary or abstract of each paper and a description of the overall purpose of the panel. The format for panels should include three or four presenters, a chairperson, and, if desired, a discussant. We urge presenters to consider panel structures that will encourage discussion and scholarly exchange. Each panel or roundtable will last an hour and a half.
In addition to panels and roundtables, we will feature a Saturday evening performing arts event, a special exhibit of Indian art at the Williams College Museum of Art, and exhibitions from the Archival collection of Chauncey Goodrich (Williams Class of 1861), a missionary to late nineteenth-century China. Post-conference activities may include a tea ceremony open to scholars, the community, and their families. Because the Berkshires are a particularly desirable destination during peak foliage season, hotel rooms blocked for the conference are LIMITED, available on a first-come, first-serve basis, so please reserve early! Information about housing and the Williamstown area are available on our website.
Please use the following forms when submitting proposals: Panel or Roundtable Proposal, Individual Paper Proposal. Forms may be submitted via regular mail, fax, or e-mail. The Conference Program will be determined by early July.
