This is the first call for papers and participation for the fifth North
Eastern Workshop on Southern Africa. The meeting will be held at the
Bishop Booth Conference Center in Burlington, Vermont, on the weekend of 19-21 April 2002. The conference is organized around intensive
discussion of pre-circulated papers. There are also many opportunities
for informal conversation of work-in-progress.
Located on 130 acres of forest with its own secluded beach, the center
is an ideal location for discussion and conversation. We especially
encourage participation from professionals, scholars, and graduate
students in Africa as well as those located in Canada and the United
States.
If you are interested in attending please contact Clifton Crais either
by email (Crais@kenyon.edu) or by writing to the Department of History,
Kenyon College, Gambier OH, 43022. Indicate whether you would like
to: a) present a paper; b) serve as a discussant; or c) simply attend
the workshop.
Proposed papers should include a full title and a one or two paragraph
description. Please send four copies of the proposal to Clifton Crais
at the above address no later than 15 August.
Please note that the deadline for paper abstracts, which will be posted
on the conference's Web site, is January 31. The deadline for completed papers is March 15, 2002 so that the papers can be pre-circulated to discussants and registered participants.
Drawing on the successful precedents of the former Southern African
Research Program at Yale and the Canadian Research Consortium on
Southern Africa, this program is designed to give Southern Africanists
the opportunity for close and intensive discussion of work across a wide variety of scholarly fields.
Burlington is easily accessible. By car it is ninety minutes from
Montreal, 3 hours from Boston and approximately five hours from New
York. In addition to its airport Burlington is served by AMTRAK and
several bus lines.
The Bishop Booth Center offers inexpensive accommodation and meals in a
beautiful setting. The cost for meals and a shared room for the
conference is $150.00. The registration fee for the conference is
$30.00. The registration fee is waived for graduate students and for
visitors from Southern Africa.
