This summer, the second Erasmus Summer School on Social Ontology will take place at the Erasmus university, Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
The coming Erasmus Summer School on Social Ontology will be on "Emotions and the limits/extensions of rationality", with as a special guest Jon Elster (Columbia University), who will present and discuss his 1999-book Alchemies of the Mind. Rationality and the Emotions (CUP) with renown specialists in the field.
The aim of the Summer School is to address the central topic - the role of emotions in human agency - from a series of interrelated issues: from the philosophy of mind, and the history of emtions, to the nature of explanation by ‘mechanisms’ and to the role of emotions & rationality in moral philosophy.
It is open to post-graduates working in the field, either in philosophy or in psychology or one of the social sciences, who are interested in coming to grips with the undeniable but often elusive role of emotions in human agency. They will find here a unique possibility of detailed discussions of the work of Jon Elster, as well as first-hand information about the latest developments in the study of emotions as a fundamental category in human agency. Participants will have ample opportunities to discuss their own work with the specialists invited to lecture.
This summer school will take place from 17 to 21 June 2001 at the Erasmus university.
