SPACE COWBOYS: Portraying Masculinity in Early Modern Italy (04/15/01; GEMCS 11/15/01-11/18/01)

Abstracts sought for a special session at the annual conference of GEMCS (The Group for Early Modern Cultural Studies) to be held in Philadelphia, PA, November 15-18, 2001. This year’s conference theme is “A Space Odyssey.” Desirable submissions for the panel, “Space Cowboys,” will examine the social, political, racial, and gendered spaces of masculinity as constructed within portraiture. Especially welcome will be 10-minute papers offering critical investigations of machismo and new frontiers of identity within a variety of portrait types (self, individual, family or group portraits, donor portraits within religious narratives, political portraits, allegories and personifications). Interdisciplinary approaches and new methodologies are encouraged.
