Encyclopedia of Women and Islamic Cultures (EWIC)
EWIC is envisioned as a broad based, interdisciplinary, cross-cultural,
transhistorical encyclopedia, focusing specifically on women in Islamic
cultures, but also including non-Muslim women in cultures where Islam has had a
significant presence. It will be the first such encyclopedia. It will be
published by Brill (Leiden) in 2003, as a 2,000,000 word, three-volume set. The
Editorial Board includes myself as General Editor and Associate Editors Julie
Peteet (University of Louisville), Afsaneh Najmabadi (Barnard College, Columbia
University), Seteney Shami (Social Science Research Council), Jacqueline Siapno
(Australian National University), and Jane I. Smith (Hartford Seminary). We are
interested in inviting broad participation in writing of the Encyclopedia
entries, (including qualified graduate student, if you would like to recommend
any). We are in the preliminary stages of the project. As part of the
preparation, we are creating a contributors to the project. Potential
contributors will be identified and recruited in approximately one year, though
we will begin with some entries earlier. If your research is relevant to women
and Islamic cultures, we would appreciate your sending us the following
