"Speaking History/History Speaks: Theorizing Communication in History"

The steering committee for the Fifth Annual Graduate Student History and Theory Conference at the University of California, Irvine invites proposals for its 2001 conference. This conference will explore theories and histories of communication relating both to the role of the historian as narrator and also to questions of the cultural role of communication in history. Interdisciplinary graduate student papers and panels are welcomed, as are presentations which interrogate communication using multi-media or performance. Panel and paper topics might include (but are not limited to) the following:
Media, Visuality and Historical Narratives
Theories and Histories of Communication Innovations
Communicating Subjectivity(Languages of Religion, Sexuality, Race, Gender, Politics, Class)
Global and Post-colonial Communication
Locating the Audience Historically (Spectatorship and Reading Publics)
Reception Theory
The Formation of Intellectual Publics
Historicizing Art, Architecture and the Performing Arts
Communicating Memory
Theories and Practices of Public History
Submission Information:
Proposals for individual presentations and panels should reach us by June 15, 2001
Individual submissions must include:
- Cover page with name, address, phone number and e-mail
- Abstract of no more than 250 words
- A short (two-page maximum) CV
Panel submissions must include:
- Cover page for each participant with name, address, phone number and e-mail (Please specify panel organizer)
- Panel abstract of 250 words
- 250 word description of each paper
- A short (two-page maximum) CV for each participant
Panels will consist of three participants. **We will provide chairs and discussants for all panels.**
