7th ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL COMIC ARTS FESTIVAL (ICAF) /
FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL DE LA BANDE DESSINEE
THEME: "Comics Out of Bounds"
September 13 - 15, 2001
Holiday Inn Select, Bethesda, Maryland, USA
On-site at, and in partnership with, The Expo2001
(the USA's foremost convention for alternative and
small-press comics)
Recent developments demand a rethinking of print culture, and
in particular of comic art - as a form, a pastime, and an
institution. Even as digital media throw a new light on print,
comic art struggles to move beyond traditional commercial
genres, toward fresh new applications and new audiences.
Upheavals in comics publishing suggest that the time is
right to think "outside the box," to reconceive comics
beyond the boundaries of familiar formats and venues.
ICAF 2001 welcomes a rethinking of the art form, as
well as speculations about the form's future. We especially
welcome presenters who will question the givens of comics
publishing and comics scholarship: accepted notions of format,
genre, and reception. Relevant topics include but are not
limited to:
- Comparisons/connections between comics and other visual-verbal forms
- Cross-pollination between different comic art
traditions, e.g., manga, bande dessinee, fumetti, etc.
- Digital comics in theory and practice
- Marginalized genres, e.g., history, journalism, instruction, polemic
- The future of comic strips/comic books/graphic novels
- Disciplinary identity and territoriality in comics and
comics scholarship.
ICAF 2001 invites brief scholarly presentations,
not to exceed 20 minutes. We welcome a variety
of formats, including reading, collaboration,
and moderated discussion (but always supported by visuals).
Presentations will be organized into three-person panels
and the 20-minute limit MUST be observed.
Proposals should be in the form of brief written abstracts,
not to exceed 500 words, and should specify AV requirements.
(Note: ICAF cannot offer to bring a monitor or videoprojection
equipment.)
DEADLINE for proposals to be received: Monday, April 2, 2001
Send abstracts by email (no attachments please: enclose the
abstract within the main body of your message) or post to Cecile Danehy at address below
Proposers will be notified of acceptance or rejection by
Friday, May 4. (Per ICAF custom, abstracts will be juried
by blind review.) Confirmed presenters will be asked to
submit brief abstracts and 100-word biographies for our
program before July 1.
