Conference on “ Africa: Societies, Cultures and Languages”
The annual conference on “Africa: Societies, Cultures and Languages”, this year de-voted to the subject of “Africa in Russia and Russia in Africa” will be held in St. Petersburg on 16-18 May 2001 under the auspices of the Academic Council for African Problems, Rus-sian Academy of Sciences, the Centre of Civilisational and Regional Studies RAS, the Mu-seum of Anthropology and Ethnography RAS and the State University of St. Petersburg.
The issues to be discussed are as follows:
- Historic ties and co-operation of the USSR/Russia with African states;
- Images of Russia in African cultures and images of Africa in Russian culture;
- African Diaspora in Russia and Russian communities in African countries;
- African studies in Russia: sources, traditions, the present condition and per-spectives;
- Traditions and novelties in the languages and literatures of African countries;
- Europe and Africa: historic and cultural ties.
The Organising Committee has the honour to invite you and members of your re-search centre / institution of learning to take part in the forum in question.
Your applications, together with abstracts (not to exceed 200 words) and a short C.V. are expected by April 1, and your paper – by April 20, 2001.
All the expenses connected with the visit have to be covered by the participant himself / herself.
