Call for Papers
What role have children (infants>adolescents) played in shaping cultures
(e.g., popular culture, youth culture, girls' culture), communities, and
societies?
What role have institutions and discourses played in shaping children's
social realities (e.g., experiences, expectations, opportunities, actions),
emotions, identities, and such age-based cultural constructions as
childhood, girlhood, boyhood, and adolescence?
We invite papers and panels, workshops, roundtable discussions, multi-media
presentations, and other forms that provide historical perspectives on the
history of children and youth in America and the world. Also encouraged are
examinations of methodological issues (e.g., social v. cultural;
child-centered v. adult-centered) and theoretical frameworks (e.g., the
relationship of the history of children to youth studies) relating to the
research, writing, teaching, presenting, and curating of the history of
children and childhood, adolescents, and adolescence. Cross-cultural and
multidisciplinary studies are welcome.
Proposals for complete panels, individual presentations or offers to chair
or comment should include a one-page description of the paper and a one-page
vita for each participant. The deadline for submissions is February 15,
2001. Proposals should be e-mailed to the program chair, Miriam
Forman-Brunell at address below.
