The Maryland Historical Society (MHS) announces a major new exhibition, The Baltimore Album Quilt Tradition, which will be held from June 16 through September 9, 2001 at the MHS. A catalog by the same name, published in North America by The Press at the Maryland Historical Society, is now available for purchase. There will also be an on-line exhibition of a selection of the quilts being shown in Baltimore on the MHS's website at www.mdhs.org beginning in mid-April, 2001.
The Baltimore Album Quilt Tradition exhibition includes more than forty Maryland quilts from the MHS, the Lovely Lane Museum, and private collections and demonstrate the entire history of the album quilt tradition. They range from early 19th-century broderie perse (chintz appliqué) through later 19th- and 20th-century quilts that evolved from the Baltimore album tradition. The exhibition will also include paintings and decorative arts from the MHS's that illustrate the origins of some of the patterns and motifs found in the album quilts.
The catalog, The Baltimore Album Quilt Tradition, written by exhibition curator and Deputy Director for the Museum, Nancy Davis, is published in both English and Japanese. The catalog is available for $37.50 on MHS's website at www.mdhs.org or by calling The Press at the Maryland Historical Society at (410) 685-3750, ext. 317.
Every Sunday, throughout the length of the exhibition, the MHS will offer free educational programs related to The Baltimore Album Quilt Tradition.
