Dr. John M. Willinsky, Pacific Press Professor of Literacy and Technology at the University of British Columbia, will give a lecture entitled "A Knowledge Exchange Model for Scholarly Publishing," at 10:00am on Tuesday, February 6, 2001. This event will take place in Room W449 of the Main Library on the Michigan State University campus in East Lansing, Michigan.
Dr. Willinsky proposes "a new model for scholarly publishing that is based on the exchange economy of ideas that lies at the heart of the research process." This model describes "a more radical revision of scholarly communication, one which shifts the control of research dissemination to the research library, as the basic unit of knowledge management for the university and other research sites, in order to greatly reduce the costs while improving the value and access of research on a global scale." One of its ultimate goals is to bridge the gap between research and public knowledge.
A more complete description of this model can be found in the September 13, 2000, issue of "Current Issues in Education" (on-line) at http://cie.ed.asu.edu/volume3/number6/.
