I would like to announce a three-part series on "Preserving the Underground Railroad: A Regional Approach," sponsored by Delaware State University in partnership with the National Park Service. The series begins January 27 and ends on April 28. Every Saturday, national and regional experts and scholars will present seminars and workshops on how to preserve historic resources associated with the Underground Railroad within the region covering Delaware, southeastern Pennsylvania, south New Jersey, and the eastern shores of Maryland and Virginia. Part I begins January 27, 2001 featuring Paul Finkelman, University of Tulsa Law School, Scott French and Reginald Butler, Carter G. Woodson Institute at the University of Virginia, and Diane Miller, national coordinator of the Underground Railroad at the National Park Service. We will award four scholarships at $500 each to individuals submitting a five-page, type-written essay on why it is important to preserve the Underground Railroad within their local area.
