The beginning of a new century ought to be an occasion
that stimulates sensitive persons and those committed to
the highest human ideals to work courageously, in an
atmosphere of plurality and respect for diversity of
interpretations, toward the creation and dissemination of
understandings of contemporary problems. This is a
necessary prerequisite for the structural and institutional
transformation of the world system. The National
Association of Economists of Cuba and the Center for
Development Studies of South Carolina invite participation
in a forum of academic discussion at the Third
International Meeting of Economists on the theme of
Globalization and Problems of Development.
The sponsoring institutions have developed a program of
activities to be held in conjunction with the meeting on
January 28. There is a four-week reading and electronic
discussion program in English prior to travel.
Themes of the meeting include the national and
international monetary and financial structures;
international commerce and economic integration and
their contribution to economic and social development;
innovation, competition and sustainable development;
economic development, social equality, and
environmental sustainability; and regulation of
transnational corporations. The official languages of the
meeting are Spanish, English, French and Portuguese.
Presentations can be made in any of these languages.
The price ranges from $950 to $1170 (U.S. dollars)
depending on the accommodations selected by the
participant. The price includes registration and program
fees for all the activities; lodging for 7 nights with
breakfast included in the hotel selected; transportation to
all activities; entrance fees to museums; lunch in el
Floridita restaurant in Old Havana on January 28;
services of guide; and services of translator. The fee
does not include air travel to and from Havana as well as
lunches not mentioned and dinners.
