Greenwood Press is seeking an author for its Culture and Customs of Asia Series, Thailand volume. The following is an outline of the project.
Culture and Customs of Thailand
Book length: 70,000 to 80,000 words.
Anticipated readership: the general public; in particular, high school and college students.
Expected completion date: 15 to 24 months after the signing of the contract
Initial run of copies: 1,500-2000 hardbound copies, with attractive 2-3 color, artist-designed printed covers.
Anticipated retail price: $40-$50

1. A general introduction to the nation [including land, people, brief history, economy, etc.]
2. Thought and religion [providing what might call the "cultural bases" of the nation; including ethics]
3. Literature and art [reflecting both the elite and popular culture]
4. Architecture and housing [with a focus on residential houses of the common people]
5. Cuisine and traditional dress [eating and dressing as one category]
6. Gender, courtship, and marriage [sex follows]
7. Festivals and leisure activities [many leisure activities are festival-related]
8. Music and dance [possibly including traditional theater]
9. Social customs and lifestyle [putting all "miscellanies" here?]
Glossary [terms important to an understanding of the nation's culture]
Suggested reading [contemporary works accessible to the general public]
Index [subject and person]
The book should also include about 25 illustrations.

The prospective author should be a specialist of Thailand or Southeast Asia. Previous publications on Thailand are highly desirable.
