American Indian Societies, Cultures, and Gender in Midwestern and Eastern North America. Director: Jean O'Brien (Ojibwe), University of Minnesota. Guest lecturers: Brenda Child (Ojibwe), Barry O'Connell, Amherst College; Raymond Fogelson, University of Chicago; A. LaVonne Brown Ruoff, emerita, University of Illinois at Chicago and interim director, D'Arcy McNickle Center. The institute is designed for 15 teachers from American Indian tribal colleges and Native American studies programs. Participants will receive $2,000 each for housing and per diem, up to $1,000 each for travel to and from Newberry Library, and a book and photocopying allowance.
