The American Society for Legal History is pleased to invite applications for the biennial Willard Hurst Legal History Institute. The Institute's purpose is to advance the approach to legal scholarship fostered by Willard Hurst and emphasizes the importance of understanding law in context and in action. The Institute will focus on assisting legal scholars and scholars of other disciplines in pursuing research in legal history. The Institute will take place June 11-22, 2001 on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. In the summer of 2001, the Institute will be led by Professor Lawrence M. Friedman of Stanford University and will emphasize American legal history. The The Institute will be comprised of up to twelve
Fellows and preference will be given to applications from scholars in the early stages of their scholarly careers (beginning faculty members, doctoral students who have completed or almost completed their dissertations, and J.D. graduates with appropriate backgrounds). Applications may be considered from more advanced
