The Center for Population Economics at the University of Chicago invites researchers to visit its website at http://www.cpe.uchicago.edu. The website contains extensive health and mortality data compiled for Union Army veterans from the U.S. Civil War. The Center invites researchers to use the data extraction system (located at http://www.cpe.uchicago.edu/data/data.html) to create a subset of the data for themselves. The website also includes a publications archive that researchers will find helpful (see http://www.cpe.uchicago.edu/publication/publication.html), as well as a software library (at http://www.cpe.uchicago.edu/general/general.html) where we store useful statistical routines and utility programs. The FAQs page (http://www.cpe.uchicago.edu/faqs/faqs.html) provides information on how to read and use the data sets.
Individuals may also order free-of-charge three CDs containing the Union Army data sets.
