The Beats and Their Counterculture
The Southwest/Texas Popular Culture Association and American Culture
Associations
are holding a series of panels at the next meeting of these groups, March
7-10 2001, in Albuquerque, New Mexico at the Sheraton Old Town Hotel. We
have met there for the last two years and it has proved to be a perfect venur
for us, providing as it does the sights, sounds, tastes and museums of the
Southwest.
This call is for papers dealing with the Beat Movement, its origins and/or
its cultural and literary impact on America and the world.
Papers on any of the following authors or groups of authors are welcome:
William Burroughs; Gregory Corso; Diane DiPrima; Lawrence Ferlinghetti; Allen
Ginsberg; Michael McClure; Ed Sanders; Gary Snyder; Charles Bukowski; Frank
O'Hara; Bob Dylan; Philip Lamantia; Bob Kaufman; Amiri Baraka (Leroi Jones);
Ray Bremser; Kenneth Rexroth; Philip Whalen; John Clellen Holmes; Jack
Kerouac; Herbert Huncke; Ken Kesey. Commentators like Norman Mailer and Alan
Watts can also be discussed.
Other possible subjects:
Ann Charters (anthologist and commentator of the Beat movement)
Academia and The Beats
The Beats connection to writers such as Dostoevsky and Paul Bowles
The Beats and American Cultural History
