SEA 2001 - April, Norfolk, VA
This panel, approved for the Society of Early Americanists Conference taking place March 8- 10, 2001, seeks to bring together scholars of the early republic working in all disciplines.
During the years of the early republic, the need to create a new polity with an internal political center led to practical institution-building and to pastoral dreams. This panel will bring together papers that investigate the many ways in which Americans envisioned and sought to create perfected worlds in - or outside of - their new nation, and the interaction of those plans for improvement or escape with the political, social, and cultural developments of the republic.
Please send a brief abstract and cv. Email submissions are welcomed.
