Sections of Indiana and Illinois share the title of "Calumet Region," an area molded around the southwestern end of Lake Michigan. The region serves as a crossroads for today’s travelers: on modern highway corridors, railroad lines, even birds on migratory routes. It preserves the battle of trees versus prairie, the water versus the dunes; it is where east meets west, north meets south. It has proven to be more than just a way station on the road to Chicago. It is a place where people from all over the world meet and live, an interesting mix of industry and nature that helped to shape the nation’s political landscape and fostered the creation of numerous social instiitutions and movements.
The region’s unusual blend of industries, communities and natural areas is found nowhere else on earth. This conference provides an opportunity to become more familiar with the numerous treasures found within this bi-state region and the various groups and organizations celebrating, preserving and protecting the unique heritage of the Calumet Region.
