The 23rd annual meeting of the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic will take place in Baltimore, Maryland, July 19-22, 2001. The featured theme of the meeting will be "Lived Lives in the Early Republic." The Program Committee particularly invites proposals for papers, sessions, panels, workshops, and discussions that focus on the nature and quality of lived experience during the period. We look to encourage proposals geared toward fostering dialogue and reflection on biography, case study, and exploration of the individual instance as they may serve as windows on the period. Papers and sessions that invite cross-cultural comparison between the U.S. and other cultures during this period, as well as proposals for sessions employing non-traditional formats, are also welcome. As always, the Program Committee will give equal consideration to proposals in any areas of research that reflect the diversity and vitality of scholarship on the early republic.

The Program Committee will use the H-SHEAR network and website to post abstracts of as many papers as possible.

Proposals for individual papers or for entire sessions should be sent by January 15, 2001 to Andrew and Mary Cayton, SHEAR Program Co-Chairs at address below.

Proposals for should include a one-page prospectus for each paper and brief c.v.s for all participants. Scholars who would like to serve as chairs or commentators are invited to write to the Program Co-Chairs as well. Unless affiliated with disciplines other than history, panelists are required to be members of SHEAR.
