The Program on Global Security & Cooperation of the Social Science Research Council is pleased to announce its competition for grants to qualified individuals (such as scholars, NGO professionals, journalists, and lawyers) who currently reside or work in places where there are longstanding, intractable, or widespread violent conflicts. These grants are designed to fund research activities – involving collaboration with other researchers – that are focused on building new approaches to conflict and peace in those places. Funds for this grant have been provided by the John D. and Katherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
ELIGIBILTY
- Projects should be led by practitioners and scholars in the early stages of their careers, but may involve other more senior individuals.
Practitioners (including nongovernmental and multilateral organization professionals, activists, journalists, and lawyers) must possess between 3 and 15 years of professional experience.
- Scholars must have a PhD or have a Masters degree plus research and teaching experience. PhD holders must have received the degree less than 10 years ago and those with Masters must have received the degree less than 15 years ago.
- Individuals who are both scholars and practitioners are encouraged to apply. They should meet at least one of the above categories of eligibility.
- Applicants should either reside or work in a zone of conflict.
- There are no nationality or citizenship restrictions and the SSRC encourages applications from women.
TERMS
- The grant is for a period of 4-6 months for up to $12,000.
- Applications can be submitted jointly by 2 or more individuals.
- Research activities must involve other participants in addition to the applicant(s); participants can be drawn either from a single country or from varying countries.
- Grantees are expected to attend 2 SSRC conferences with other recipients of grants under this program at the beginning and end of the grant period, and to communicate with other grantees on a regular basis.
- For this reason, the start date for all grants is the same: September 2001.
- A written final product is required.
All application materials, including letters of recommendation, should arrive in one envelope and MUST BE RECEIVED BY February 1, 2001. Awards will be announced in April 2001.
