Ball State University and the Minnetrista Cultural Center

"Community, Family, and Youth: `Growing' America, America Growing"
For its annual conference, the Great Lakes American Studies Association, in
conjunction with the French American Studies Association, invites proposals
for individual papers and presentations as well as panels exploring through
interdisciplinary approaches any aspect of community, family, or youth in
the United States. We are especially interested in work that shows
interconnections among these topics. We extend a special invitation to our
colleagues in Europe to join us in examining this theme. Possible topics
include, but are hardly limited to:
-artistic and literary images of community, family, and/or youth
-historical experiences or historical changes in community, family, and/or
youth
-expressions of community, family, and/or youth in activities like
religion, education, sport, consumerism, music, labor, or other aspects of
popular culture
-gender roles in community, family, and/or youth
-ethnicity and race in community, family, and/or youth
-urban and rural perspectives on community, family, and/or youth
-impact of technology and environmental issue on these concepts
-changing definitions of these concepts
-new theoretical models for examining these concepts
-political and economic issues involving these concepts
-differences between American and European conceptions of community,
family, and/or youth
We encourage submissions from graduate and advanced undergraduate students,
who will not be charged a conference registration fee.
Proposals are due October 1, 2000. Please send a one page c.v. and three
copies of your abstract. Individual abstracts should be 250 words, while
panels should be 500 words. Send to Anthony O. Edmonds at address listed below.
