"From Slavery to Freedom: Manumission in the Atlantic World."
The Program in the Carolina Lowcountry and the Atlantic World will sponsor an international conference/workshop on Manumissions in the Atlantic World at the College and University of Charleston, S.C., from October 4-8, 2000. The aim of the conference is to bring together scholars from North America, the Caribbean and Latin America, Europe and Africa to consider an often-mentioned but less often studied aspect of slavery — manumission — as well as the broader topic of freedom to which it is closely related. The program includes over 70 scholars from around the Atlantic World. See our website for a draft program and registration information.
