The XVI Annual Spring Symposium on South Asian Studies at the Center for South Asian Studies, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, will be held between April 13 and 15, 2000. This year's theme is "Public Culture and Democracy in South Asia". Keynote speakers include Urvashi Butalia (Kali For Women), Bapsi Sidhwa (author), and Rimli Bhattacharya (Professor of Comparative Literature, MS University, Baroda, and Distinguished Watumull Visiting Scholar, University of Hawaii). In addition to panels focused on academic topics, we will be screening the movie "Earth" (directed by Deepa Mehta and based on the novel "Ice Candy Man" written by Bapsi Sidhwa). There will be a round-table on "Earth" led by Urvashi Butalia, Bapsi Sidhwa and Rimli Bhattacharya on Saturday Arpil 15 at 10:00 am to which all interested folks in the community are invited to participate.
