"Political Cultures in the Andes, 1750-1950" is an international comparativist conference taking place at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Thursday through Sunday, March 23 - 26, 2000.
(see http://AndesPolitics.history.uiuc.edu/)
This conference brings together historians and anthropologists who work from distinct conceptual perspectives -- including hegemony, postcolonial studies, and neo-Tocquevillean approaches to the public sphere -- to discuss Andean cases in a broadly comparative framework. Specific issues to be treated concern nationalism and nation-state formation, "race," ethnic identity, and political projects of inclusion and exclusion, violence, political participation and the power of national governments, gender orders, state-building and different notions of space, caudillismo and the politics of representation, and Andean configurations of civil society and public spheres.
