Meridel Le Sueur Anthology - Call for Article and Essay Proposals
You are invited to submit proposals for a collection of articles and essays on Meridel Le Sueur celebrating the centennial anniversary of her birth. Le Sueur’s work has been neglected by academic critics, and the commentary on her that does exist tends to focus on her political leanings- which is indeed an important dimension of her work. But she has not been recognized as an environmentalist writer, in spite of the fact that nature occupies a central place in her writings. Inclusion of Le Sueur in the canon of environmentalist literature will add to our existing understanding of ecofeminist perspectives of nature and society. Even more significantly, it will open new pathways of discussion concerning topics that have been given little attention in environmental literary discourse.
Here is a broad list of topics that are relevant to Le Sueur’s work: the character of the upper Midwest region; relation between people and land within farming communities; work, survival and nature; the common oppression and exploitation of people and land; new perspectives on immigrants; issues at the intersection of environment and class; the uses of the tall tale and regional myth in her work (including her children’s stories); folk tales and speech as natural production; ecofeminism & Le Sueur; Le Sueur’s organic writing style, and its relation to Susan Griffin.
(Note: searching for items on Le Sueur can sometimes be difficult, as her name is not always spelled the same way. Inclusion of the space in “Le Sueur” is important.)
Deadline for 500 word article proposals is 5 May 2000. Please send any inquiries regarding proposals to: email@example.com. Proposals themselves can be sent snail-mail to: Jan Stryz, 3553 Graff Rd., Belding MI 48809. You may also send proposals to my e-mail address given above. Please include an e-mail address or a self-addressed stamped envelope so that I can acknowledge receipt of your proposal.
