International Faculty Development Seminar

The Council on International Educational Exchange is offering an International Faculty Development Seminar to Argentina and Chile June 18-26, 2000. This 9-day, intensive program is designed for U.S. college faculty and administrators. The program features lectures and study tours focused on the seminar's theme and opportunities to interact with scholarly communities abroad.
RATIONALE
This seminar focuses on the political, social, and economic realities of contemporary Argentina and Chile. The differences and similarities between the two nations' current situations will be addressed. Both countries have emerged from authoritarian governance in recent years and are grappling with the issues of human rights and democratization. Chile and Argentina have experienced profound economic changes that have had implications in terms of income distribution, growth, and equity. Movements towards greater economic integration have also marked these nations significantly. The impact of the upcoming/recent presidential elections in Argentina and Chile will also be examined. The seminar will begin in Santiago, Chile's capital city, and ends in Buenos Aires, Argentina's capital.
HOST INSTITUTION:
The seminar is hosted by the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO) in both Argentina and Chile. FLACSO is an international academic institution, founded in 1957 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), with the purpose of promoting research, training, and technical assistance in the social sciences in Latin America. FLACSO sponsors the largest, most important, and most prestigious teaching program in the social sciences in Latin America, particularly in the areas of culture, gender studies, political studies, social policy, international studies, and military affairs.

Note: This nine-day seminar begins in Santiago (three nights) and ends in Buenos Aires (five nights). Group travel by air between Chile and Argentina is included in the seminar fee.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: March 15, 2000
ELIGIBILITY:
Faculty Seminar participants should be faculty and/or administrators at two- or four-year institutions of higher education. In order to facilitate an interdisciplinary exploration of the seminar theme, applicants from all academic concentrations are encouraged to apply.
SEMINAR FEE: $1995.
The seminar includes the academic program (lectures and briefings, site visits, and study tours), seminar materials, academic leadership, orientation and farewell receptions, accommodations, breakfast and lunch daily, entrance fees for all included excursions, in-country transportation to scheduled activities, International Teacher Identity Card [ITIC] (providing travel insurance), and airport transfers overseas (coordinated around the Council-arranged Group Flight).
