This is the final call for papers for the Religion and National Identity Conference to be held in Adelaide, South Australia, Friday 7 and Saturday 8 July 2000 in conjunction with the AHA. Papers can be confirmed by sending me a title by 24 January 2000 (if you have already done so could you confirm these details).
It would also be useful to have some indication of the number interested in forming a table at the AHA dinner on the night of Friday 7 July.
So far, in addition to the keynote address by Professor Adrian Hastings(scheduled for Friday 7 July 11-12.30), there have been offers of sixteen papers (chiefly on Australian topics). Professor Hastings will also be giving an address to the Australian Historical Association conference on the Saturday morning dealing with nationalism in its more secular manifestations.
Given that we would like to aim to finish by lunch on the Saturday(leaving time for those who wish to accompany David Hilliard on his tour of Adelaide's churches and pubs from 2.00) this will probably leave about 30 mins for each paper. If we have a sudden avalanche of papers we could run two parallel session but this is to be avoided if possible.
The Journal of Religious History plans to publish a special issue of the journal in 2001 (linking with the centenary celebrations of Federation) on the theme of 'Religion and National Identity'. We would be able to publish six papers of about eight thousand words one of which would almost certainly be Prof. Hastings. However, we might also be able to publish additional papers in subsequent issues of the journal. If you would like to have your paper considered for publication could you provide me at the conference with a near final version suitable for sending out to referees.
The conference will be held in conjunction with the Australian Historical Association Conference, Wed. 5 July to Sat. 8 July. Those registering for the Religious History Society Conference will also be registering for the Australian Historical Association Conference which will arrange accommodation.
