The field of Jewish Studies has expanded dramatically in the last fifty years. Numerous university departments, and other centres and institutes, offer Jewish Studies in a variety of forms. There are over 100 of these in Western Europe, more than 50 in the former Soviet Union, some in Asia and South America, large numbers in North America and an enormous
concentration of resources in Israel.
What is missing are strong lines of communication and information between them. In particular, students have little means of linking up with the wider world of Jewish Studies beyond their own academic institution or country. The conference
aims to break through this barrier.
We seek to:
- Acquaint students with scholarship which exists on an international basis
- Enable students working on Jewish topics to become less isolated
- Foster a sense of being part of a worldwide Jewish Studies community
- Forge important links with others in the same field
Through participation in this conference, you can
- Meet and have available for discussion senior scholars in the field of Jewish Studies
- Help organise surveys of the field
- Obtain feedback on your own research
- Visit resource centres in the UK (Oriental Collection of the British Library, Cambridge Genizah Project)
The conference will be divided into six broad topic areas:
- MODERN JEWISH HISTORY AND POLITICS
- TEXTS AND PRIMARY SOURCES
- THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD
- JEWISH LITERATURE AND CULTURE
- ANCIENT JEWISH HISTORY
- JEWISH HISTORIOGRAPHY ARCHIVES,
- LIBRARIES, COLLECTIONS, DATABASES
Each day there will be sessions presenting student work, national surveys, and special seminars by international scholars. The language of the conference will be English, but presentations may be made in the native language of participants
provided an English handout is available. Please note that pre-registration is advisable as places cannot be guaranteed at the door.
