Civil War Workshop presented by APCWS and Wilson College
July 30 - August 2, 2000
Are you looking for a way to make the Civil War come alive in your classroom? We are happy to present a hands-on Civil War teachers' workshop using historic Civil War sites as our classrooms. Participants will create lesson plans and develop activities to return with an exciting classroom experience for their students. Join us from July 30 - August 2, 2000, in a workshop designed to make learning about the Civil War more enjoyable and productive - for both teachers and students!
The workshop will be hosted by Wilson College, in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, and will include teacher-oriented tours of Harper's Ferry and Antietam. Special presentations focusing on historical aspects of the period such as Civil War medicine, civilian life and the importance of geography will be blended with pedagogically oriented presentations on topics such as the effective use of museums, archives, on-line resources, first person impressions and cross-curricular themes in the classroom.
Presenters include David Finney, Mary Abroe, Hannah Geffert, Tom Clemens, John Michael Priest, John McDermott, David Bush, The National Museum of Civil War Medicine, and Park Service historians from Antietam and Harper's Ferry. These, among other, experienced teachers and guides will lead the workshop and share their methods and perspectives with workshop participants. Participants will also collaborate in workgroups to create lesson plans to take back to their classrooms.
This program is designed with the public secondary school teacher in mind, and activities reflect national social studies standards. However, if you work in a private educational setting or home-school your children this program will provide you with an educational and enjoyable experience. We are working to meet regional state requirements for professional development activities for teachers, and a certificate will be awarded upon completion of the workshop.
