I am preparing an Instructors' Guide to be distributed with a new college textbook on African art. It could include sample syllabi, discussion questions, assignment topics, and test questions. I would be grateful for comments and suggestions from those of you who incorporate material on African arts in your courses. What topics should this Instructors' Guide include? What problems have you encountered in the past, and how might this Instructors' Guide address them?
The Instructors' Guide will accompany 'The History of Art in Africa', which is scheduled for publication by Abrams and Calmann & King this Spring; the paperback edition should be available from Prentice Hall by June, 2000. Unlike previous books and catalogues, this introductory survey covers the entire African continent, from the earliest rock art to contemporary works. It features architecture, masquerades, and other art forms difficult to display in a museum, and it includes a chapter on artists of the Diaspora.
