Sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson Birthplace Foundation in Staunton, VA,
this two-day symposium will be held in Staunton October 20 and 21, 2000.
The Woodrow Wilson National Symposium provides a forum for the exchange of
ideas relating to all aspects of American life as they pertain to Wilson's
life context (1856-1924), accomplishments and legacy. Participants from
all parts of the United States are encouraged to submit proposals for
individual papers. The WWNS invites submissions from both graduate
students and senior scholars in history, political science, theology, and
all pertinent fields of study. Papers selected by the WWNS will be
presented at the symposium.
The symposium's theme, America: Transformation Toward the Modern,
1856-1924 will focus on changes that contributed to the transformation
of American life during Woodrow Wilson's lifetime. Papers will address
one of the five following topics:
- 1. Technology - changes in communication, transportation, manufacturing,
science or medicine
- 2 Political developments of the late 19th and early 20th centuries
- 3. The changing religious composition of the American population and/or
the impact of religion on American society and culture
- 4. Social, literary, artistic and intellectual movements
- 5. Valley of Virginia (of regional interest) - explore the degree to
which the Shenandoah Valley did or did not sponsor, reflect or resist
national trends
Submissions must include a 300-word abstract and title, cover letter,
and curriculum vitae. No restrictions on length of paper, but delivery
time for papers selected for presentation will be limited to 20-25
