CALL FOR PARTICIPATION:
Mock Interviewing Sessions at the 1999 ASA Meeting in Montreal
The Students' Committee of the American Studies Association will sponsor
two open sessions of mock interviews for students at the 1999 Annual
Meeting. On Friday, October 29, from 11 to 2, six mock interviews will be
offered for an English Department position for an interdisciplinary
scholar, and on Saturday, October 30, from 1 to 4, six mock interviews will
be offered for a History Department Position for an interdisciplinary
scholar. At this time, we are recruiting professors and students to take
part in this process as interviewers and interviewees. (All conference
attendees are invited to attend this year's sessions as audience members.)
Each interview will last fifteen minutes, and will be followed by a
fifteen-minute response and discussion period. We are in search of
professors willing to serve as mock interviewers for one hour, during which
time they will be part of a two-professor interviewing team. With the help
of recruited professors, the co-chairs of the mock interviewing sessions,
Maureen Reed and Janine Santiago, will generate sample job descriptions
that can be effectively used as part of the interview process. Examples of
questions used during the 1998 mock interview sessions in Seattle are
posted at the following Web address:
http://www.georgetown.edu/crossroads/interests/student/questions.html
Please consider volunteering to serve as an interviewer, or to get practice
as an interviewee, and thus helping to make the second annual installment
of this event as successful as the first. If you would like to
participate, send information (as per the example below) to Maureen Reed,
either through e-mail at mo.reed@mail.utexas.edu, or to 1910-B W. 37th St.,
Austin, TX 78731 by September 30, 1999. As only 12 mock interview spots
will be available, a lottery will be conducted if necessary. Professors
and students who are selected for mock interview sessions will be notified
before the ASA meeting.
